Renting a car vs. using your own car

Question:

When you are traveling by car, do you ever consider using a rental car rather than your own vehicle?  Seems like a couple of issues come into play. Wear and tear on your own car, which option is cheaper, writing off the trip for tax purposes, etc.

Thanks and maybe this would be good to post on the blog, especailly if you can think of a few more pros and cons for each.

Answer:

The only time I’ve done that (rented a car to travel vs. using my own car) was once I was going to be on the road for a whole week doing about 4 or 5 big workshops—and I had so much stuff, it wouldn’t even fit in my car (I had an Audi then). I rented a van that time.

It sort of depends on your vehicle and what your accountant says, too. I have always written off as much of my car as I could since I went into business. So that’s something else to consider, too.

If it’s easier to get reimbursed for the cost of a rental car, then you might do it for that reason, too.

Right now, I believe the reimbursement cost if you are charging a client mileage is 58 cents/mile.
