Domain Names (what’s in a name?)
Question:
What’s the difference between all the extensions on domain names?

Answer:
The first part of the answer comes from 1and1.com (the place where I register all my domain names):
“A domain name is a unique tag that identifies you to other computers connected to the Internet. Every domain name represents a set of numbers called an IP address. For example, 1&1’s IP address is 217.160.232.1. So, you could type that number into your web browser’s address bar, or simply type ‘1and1.com’. Either entry will take you to our website.
- .com is most recognized
- .net is also pretty well recognized and people are used to it
- .org you can only get if you are a certain type of organization; there are rules for that one.
- .info implies that it’s info about something but it can be used for anything
- .us is worth getting once you really hit on your main domain (like I own megginmcintosh.us but not any other .us’s (at least that I’m thinking about right now…I own so many that sometimes I forget).
- .name is supposed to only be used when it’s really your name but I’m not sure how much that is checked.
- .biz is the one they tried to get to relieve some of the pressure on the .com’s but it’s never taken off the same, although it’s worth getting on some of your most important domain names
- .tv is only for tv stations
- .mobi is if you are sending things to mobile phones, or something like that.
- Not sure what .ws is. I’ll have to find out.
So go for sure with .com and get a bunch of those and then when you really hit on your company name or a brand name, buy some of the others. They’re cheap, cheap, cheap.
